Before Cancún existed as a resort, the site was virtually unknown to the world: when Mexican planners broke ground on January 23, 1970, Isla Cancún had just three residents — caretakers of a coconut plantation — with only about 117 more people in the nearby fishing hamlet of Puerto Juárez.

Cancún was chosen for development using 1968 computer models that compared potential sites against Mexico's existing resorts like Acapulco, weighing factors like climate, beaches, and hurricane risk — an unusually data-driven origin for a vacation destination.

Cancún International Airport was inaugurated on April 27, 1974, with its first commercial flight following on May 12, 1975; today CUN is the busiest airport in Mexico and all of Latin America for international passenger traffic.
